Resins for Silicone Rubber Moulding Material
There are different materials that can be used for silicone moulding. Resin is just one of them that have been proved very good for this task. Resin is rapidly becoming the most preferred material for silicone rubber moulding because of its ability to suit several different projects. Even if you need to create mould for jewellery, resins would just be good enough for your project. Resins come in various forms thus creating a wide range of choices for different projects. Generally, resins are made of epoxy, polyester, or polyurethane. This material comes in either opaque or clear finishes.Opaque resin is the most commonly used material for silicone moulding projects. An example of opaque resin that is commonly used nowadays is the polyurethane two part resin. This material for silicone moulding comes in different forms and settings times. The advantage of this material is that it takes relatively very short time usually 3 to 5 minutes to set hard when mixed. It is highly recommended for silicone moulding because it gets hot faster and retain heat for long. Another advantage is that it can be easily coloured. Its base colour ranges from white to creamy beige.Clear resins are also widely used as silicone moulding materials. They are very brittle as compared to opaque resins. They also make the cheapest casting material for silicone rubber moulding. A good example which is commonly used is the polyester clear casting resin. This actually produces very clear and hard casting material for silicone moulding. It can be easily polished by hand to produce effects which are like glass. This material is very excellent for embedding. Unlike the opaque type, it has slow setting times.
